Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia is bracing for heavy rainfall this weekend, with the heaviest downpours expected late Saturday into Sunday. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall on Sunday, particularly along the Blue Ridge Mountains and the I-81 corridor. Localized flash flooding is a possibility, making travel potentially hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rain will begin late Friday night and continue through early Monday morning. Forecasts predict 2 to 3 inches of rainfall in many areas, with totals reaching higher amounts in localized pockets. The rainiest period will likely occur Sunday, with strong south winds and gusts up to 24 mph adding to the impact.

Drivers traveling along I-81 should prepare for reduced visibility and potential ponding on roadways. Those in low-lying areas or near rivers should remain alert for flash flood warnings and be ready to take action.

Rain will taper off Sunday night, giving way to partly cloudy skies on Monday with highs in the mid-50s. However, another round of rain showers is forecast for Tuesday. This extended period of wet weather may create delays for post-holiday travelers.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and monitor local updates for real-time weather advisories.
