Seattle, WA – Travelers are warned to prepare for hazardous conditions as a winter storm continues to batter Washington’s Cascade mountain passes. Snowfall is expected to persist through Saturday, with accumulations of up to 18 inches in higher elevations, including Snoqualmie Pass.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will intensify overnight Friday, bringing heavy snow above 3,500 feet and strong winds that could create whiteout conditions. Travel on major routes like I-90 may become treacherous, with snow-covered roads and poor visibility reported by early Saturday morning.
The advisory warns of potential road closures and delays in mountain regions. Drivers should avoid non-essential travel and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and blankets. Tire chains are required for vehicles traveling through Snoqualmie and Stevens passes.
In addition to heavy snow, wind gusts of up to 40 mph could topple tree branches, creating additional safety hazards. Snowfall is expected to ease by late Saturday, but lingering icy conditions may impact travel into Sunday.
Beyond the mountain passes, lowland areas in western Washington could see rain and temperatures hovering in the mid-30s, while eastern Washington may experience lighter snow accumulations. Travelers should monitor road and weather updates throughout the weekend.
Residents planning outdoor activities or holiday returns are urged to adjust their schedules accordingly and prepare for extended travel times. For real-time updates, consult the Washington State Department of Transportation’s travel resources.
Stay safe and remain vigilant as winter weather continues to affect the region.
