Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan residents are urged to prepare for hazardous driving conditions as a winter weather advisory takes effect today. Snow and ice are expected to create slippery roads, especially during the evening commute.
The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, begins at noon and lasts until early Tuesday morning, varying slightly by region. Areas including Midland, Bay City, and Saginaw may see 2 to 4 inches of snow. Elsewhere, including Flint, Pontiac, and Ann Arbor, snow totals will range from 1 to 3 inches, with some ice accumulation possible.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow and mixed precipitation will occur between late afternoon and early evening, coinciding with peak traffic hours. “Plan on slippery road conditions,” officials warned.
Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, slow down, and allow extra travel time. The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Michigan Drive Map provides live updates on road conditions and closures.
For Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County, a shorter advisory from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. suggests lighter snow totals but warns of icy patches that could still disrupt travel.
Residents should also monitor local forecasts for updates and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Freezing rain in some areas may complicate cleanup efforts.
Stay connected with neighbors, check on the elderly or those needing assistance, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Keep emergency kits handy, including blankets, flashlights, and phone chargers.
