Burlington, VT – Residents across Vermont should prepare for dangerously cold conditions this weekend, as a powerful Arctic front descends on the region. Temperatures will plummet Saturday night, with wind chills expected to reach as low as -30 degrees in some areas, creating hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind chills will be most severe in higher elevations, including Mount Mansfield and Mount Marcy, where overnight lows could reach -36 degrees. Even in Burlington, wind chills are predicted to drop below zero by Saturday evening. Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes at these temperatures.

Snow showers are also likely Saturday, with accumulation up to one inch in areas such as Middlebury and Rutland. Roads could become slick, especially along Route 7 and Interstate 89. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and limit travel during evening hours.

Sunday will bring little relief, with morning temperatures remaining well below freezing and wind chills lingering around -20 degrees. By Monday, temperatures will moderate slightly, with highs near 21 degrees and mostly sunny skies.

This weekend’s cold is a stark reminder of Vermont’s harsh winters. Residents should secure heating sources, dress in layers, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly. Pets should not be left outdoors for extended periods.
