Rock Island, IL – Freezing rain is set to create hazardous driving conditions across northwest Illinois overnight, with significant ice accumulation predicted. Motorists are urged to avoid non-essential travel along major routes such as I-74 and I-80, where slick roads and icy bridges are anticipated.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, freezing rain is expected to begin after midnight, continuing through early Saturday morning. Total ice accumulation could reach up to two-tenths of an inch, potentially leading to downed tree branches and power outages. Winds gusting up to 30 mph will add additional strain on ice-laden infrastructure.

Temperatures are forecast to climb above freezing by late Saturday morning, offering some relief as ice melts. However, lingering rain and wet roads will still require caution. For travelers, check road conditions at Illinois511.org and avoid bridges or overpasses whenever possible.

Looking ahead, Saturday evening will bring rain with highs near 39°F, followed by mostly cloudy skies on Sunday. Monday offers a slight chance of rain, with temperatures peaking in the mid-40s, before cooling again by midweek.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible power outages and to secure loose outdoor items. If travel is unavoidable, ensure extra distance between vehicles and reduce speeds.
