Pendleton, OR — Residents of northeastern Oregon should brace for mixed precipitation beginning tonight and lasting into Thursday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Blue Mountain Foothills, including cities like Athena, Pendleton, Heppner, and Lexington.
According to the NWS, freezing rain is expected to develop after midnight, with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice possible on roads and power lines. Light snow may also mix in before transitioning to rain later Thursday. These conditions could create slippery roads, particularly along Interstate 84 and local highways like U.S. Routes 207 and 11. Drivers are advised to reduce speeds and allow extra time for travel.
Daytime highs on Thursday will hover near 35 degrees, with precipitation tapering off by the afternoon. However, travel disruptions remain a concern, especially in areas at higher elevations.
Looking ahead, the Pendleton area is expected to see milder weather through the weekend. Friday will bring a chance of rain late in the day, with highs near 45 degrees. Rain is likely to persist on Saturday as temperatures climb to 50 degrees, offering some relief from icy conditions. By Sunday, the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-40s.
Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and use resources like TripCheck for real-time road conditions. Staying off the roads during peak freezing periods can reduce risks and ensure safety.
