Chicago, IL – Residents across northern Illinois are waking up to frigid conditions as an Arctic blast sweeps through the region today. Bitterly cold wind chills, intermittent snow showers, and gusty winds are creating hazardous travel conditions, especially south of Interstate 80.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will fall rapidly throughout the day, dropping into the teens by late afternoon. Wind chills are expected to range from -5°F to -20°F, with the coldest conditions along the Wisconsin border. Snow showers will remain intermittent through midday, with untreated roads likely to become slick. Commuters should allow extra travel time and drive cautiously.

The five-day forecast shows the cold snap will linger into Thursday, with highs struggling to reach 16°F. Thursday night will bring single-digit lows and wind chills as low as -14°F. By Friday, temperatures will begin to moderate, reaching the low 30s. A storm system moving in Saturday could bring a mix of rain and snow, increasing the risk of travel disruptions.

Plan ahead for potential icy conditions this weekend, particularly on elevated surfaces and bridges. Stay indoors as much as possible during the coldest periods, and dress in layers if venturing outside.
