Albany, NY – A red flag warning is in effect for eastern New York, including Albany, today as strong northwest winds and low humidity create critical fire weather conditions. This warning is in place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and residents are urged to exercise caution.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), gusts up to 34 mph, combined with dry vegetation, significantly increase the risk of wildfires. State and local authorities advise against open burning and encourage residents to secure outdoor items that could spark fires. Avoid using outdoor equipment that generates heat or sparks, and keep vehicles off dry grass.

Looking ahead, Sunday will see increasing cloud cover with a high near 55°F. Winds are expected to calm, but a chance of isolated showers will develop in the evening. Monday and Tuesday will bring partly sunny skies, with highs around 55-57°F. Overnight lows will hover between 30°F and 38°F. Rain is forecast to return late Tuesday night into Wednesday, offering some relief to the dry conditions.

Motorists along I-87 and surrounding areas should stay alert for reduced visibility due to blowing debris. Additionally, outdoor enthusiasts planning campfires or barbecues are encouraged to postpone these activities until conditions improve.

Fire prevention measures include keeping a 10-foot buffer around fire pits and storing water nearby. Residents should also review evacuation plans and keep a “go bag” ready in case of emergencies.
