Mokena, IL – With the fall rutting season underway, the Mokena Police Department is alerting drivers about the increased risk of deer crossing local roads. Officials warn that deer may dart into traffic without warning, particularly on Wolf Road and Route 30 near forest preserves. This area experiences a high number of vehicle-deer collisions each fall.

According to Mokena police, the risk spikes as deer become more active and unpredictable during mating season. Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully, especially around dawn and dusk when deer are most active. Slowing down and remaining alert in known deer crossing areas can help reduce the chance of an accident.

The Mokena Police Department recommends using high beams at night when safe and looking for deer crossing signs as indicators of high-risk areas. In addition, drivers should keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of them to allow more reaction time.

Fall’s heightened deer movement can lead to serious road incidents. The department hopes increased awareness will prevent collisions and keep both drivers and wildlife safe this season.
