Central Texas is bracing for near-record highs and an increased chance of thunderstorms, with temperatures peaking in the low 90s today. Morning clouds will give way to partly sunny skies by the afternoon, though Austin residents should prepare for isolated showers. Drivers, particularly on Highway 71, should stay alert to sudden rainfall and potentially slick road conditions. A weak cold front on Thursday could bring even more scattered storms.

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday brings a 20 percent chance of showers in the morning, with southeast winds gusting up to 25 mph. Austin’s temperatures are expected to hit a high of 91°F, keeping the day warm and humid. The chance of thunderstorms rises Wednesday night as winds from the southeast sustain a mild 5-10 mph, creating optimal conditions for storm development after midnight.

Thursday could see up to a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms before noon, with a high of 86°F. The cold front is expected to stall, increasing the likelihood of sporadic storms Friday and Saturday. Friday holds a 30 percent chance of scattered showers in the afternoon, with temperatures reaching 85°F. Rain chances persist through Saturday, with a 50 percent chance of showers and storms in the forecast.

While Sunday offers only isolated storm possibilities, breezy south winds will continue into early next week. Central Texas residents should monitor local forecasts and plan for rain and stormy conditions, especially during the weekend.
