Omaha, NE – Southeast Nebraska is under a heightened risk for severe weather today, including potential tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. The National Weather Service warns that storms developing this afternoon through the evening could reach severe levels, with the highest risk concentrated in southeast Nebraska and parts of southwest Iowa.

According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, severe thunderstorms are expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a 5% chance of isolated tornadoes. Large hail up to the size of quarters and wind gusts reaching 60 mph are likely. Residents in southeast Nebraska, especially those near I-80, should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.

A tornado watch may be issued later today, so be sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings. The storm system will bring much-needed rainfall, with amounts ranging from 0.10 to over 1 inch in some areas. However, ahead of the rain, the fire danger remains high due to dry conditions. Outdoor burning should be avoided.

The severe weather is expected to taper off overnight, but gusty winds and lingering storms could continue into Tuesday morning. Motorists traveling along major highways, including I-80, should exercise caution, as hail and wind may cause hazardous driving conditions. Be sure to monitor local weather updates and take shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued.
