Flagstaff, AZ – Residents and travelers in Flagstaff should prepare for the first snow of the season, set to arrive today with strong winds. A Winter Weather Advisory and a Wind Advisory have been issued for the area, affecting travel on major roadways like I-17 and I-40. High winds and accumulating snow could create hazardous conditions, especially on mountain roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect from 5 a.m. MST Friday through 6 a.m. MST Sunday. The affected areas include the Kaibab Plateau and Chuska Mountains, with snowfall predictions of up to eight inches in higher elevations. Meanwhile, gusty winds are expected to impact the eastern portions of the Little Colorado River Valley and White Mountains, with speeds reaching up to 55 mph.

The advisory warns of potentially difficult travel conditions as gusty winds could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility. Additionally, unsecured objects may be blown around, and tree limbs could break, posing risks of power outages. Officials recommend that drivers avoid travel in affected areas during the advisory and prepare emergency kits if travel is necessary.

The forecast suggests that today will start with a high near 64°F, transitioning to rain and snow showers by tonight, with temperatures dropping to 35°F. Friday and Saturday will bring a mix of rain and snow, with highs in the low 40s and lows in the 20s. The weekend is expected to clear up by Sunday, with sunny skies returning, but chilly temperatures will persist.
