La Crosse, WI – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for parts of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa due to critical fire weather conditions. Dry weather, low humidity, and gusty winds are expected to increase the risk of rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), south winds will reach 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Humidity levels will drop as low as 20%, creating conditions ideal for fires to catch and spread quickly. Affected counties include Wabasha, Olmsted, and Mower in Minnesota, and Mitchell and Floyd in Iowa.
Residents are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning today. Any fires that ignite under these conditions could become uncontrollable. It is recommended to clear away dry vegetation and ensure that any outdoor equipment is used with caution.
Temperatures will climb to around 69°F, further contributing to the fire risk. The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m., and residents should monitor emergency updates throughout the day to stay informed. While conditions may improve by this evening, fire danger will remain high until winds calm.
