Twin Cities, MN – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for much of Minnesota, as dry conditions, gusty winds, and low humidity increase the risk of fast-spreading wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), south winds of 20-25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected across the state. Humidity levels will drop as low as 15-25%, creating critical fire weather conditions. Areas along and west of the Mississippi River, including counties such as Hennepin, Wright, and Dakota, are particularly at risk.
The NWS warns that any fires that ignite could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure loose objects and avoid activities that could create sparks, such as using power tools or grills.
Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 60s, further contributing to the fire risk. While winds may calm by this evening, residents should remain vigilant throughout the day and follow local fire safety guidelines. The warning is set to expire at 7 p.m., but caution is advised until conditions improve.
