Richmond, VA – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued an urgent warning to residents about a text message scam targeting drivers statewide. The scam, known as “smishing,” involves fraudulent text messages that appear to be from E-ZPass or Virginia toll facilities, demanding payment for supposed overdue toll charges.

VDOT is advising people to be on high alert and to avoid clicking on any links or providing personal information in response to these texts. According to VDOT, those who receive such messages should immediately contact E-ZPass Customer Service through official channels to verify any legitimate toll-related concerns.

The fraudulent texts often direct recipients to a fake website resembling an E-ZPass portal, where they are asked to enter personal and payment information. VDOT has urged anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to this scam to file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov.
