Raleigh, NC – Tropical Storm Debby, initially making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Florida’s Big Bend region, has been downgraded to a tropical storm but still poses a significant threat to North Carolina. With heavy rainfall expected to impact eastern parts of the state, residents are bracing for potential flash flooding.

According to the US National Weather Service, Debby, which made landfall early this morning, has transitioned into a tropical storm, bringing considerable rainfall. Current forecasts predict 5 to 10 inches of rain across Eastern North Carolina, with local amounts potentially reaching up to 15 inches. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Friday, with the threat of river flooding expected to increase into the following week.

The primary concern now lies in the extensive rainfall and its potential to cause flash flooding and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service in Newport, NC, warns that periods of heavy rain could persist into late this week due to the storm’s slow movement. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow local advisories.
