Eastern North Carolina – Visitors to Eastern North Carolina beaches today should be aware of a moderate risk of rip currents, according to the US National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City. The advisory, issued early this morning, warns beachgoers of life-threatening rip currents along the entire stretch of the Eastern North Carolina coastline.
The elevated rip current risk is attributed to a combination of winds and a long-period swell, which heighten the danger in the surf zone. Areas under the moderate risk include popular beach destinations such as Duck, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Hatteras Village. This risk means that while rip currents are not as likely as during a high-risk event, they are still possible, and beachgoers should exercise caution.
According to the weather service, even the areas categorized under low risk, such as Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle, are not entirely safe, particularly near piers and jetties where rip currents can still occur.
The weather service advises those heading to the beach to check local forecasts and follow any posted warnings. Swimmers are urged to stay near lifeguard stations and avoid entering the water if unsure about the conditions. It’s crucial to be aware of the dangers rip currents pose and to be prepared with safety measures, especially on a day with moderate risk across the region.
