Lake County, IL: Fatal Wauconda Crash Claims Driver in Retention Pond Wednesday Morning

Lake County, IL – A tragic accident occurred in Wauconda Wednesday morning, claiming the life of a 38-year-old man. At approximately 10:24 a.m., the Wauconda Police Department and Wauconda Fire Protection District responded to reports of a vehicle submerged in a retention pond at the northeast corner of Main Street and Garland Road.

According to Chief of Police David Wermes, units arrived to find a 2010 Ford Edge overturned in the water with the driver trapped inside. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Main Street when it struck the curb at Garland Road, flipping into the pond.

Wauconda Fire District personnel extricated the victim within ten minutes, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other occupants were found in the vehicle.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating the incident in collaboration with the Wauconda Police Department. The identity of the victim will not be released until after the autopsy, which is scheduled for tomorrow morning by the Lake County Coroner’s office
