Central Illinois – Central Illinois residents are being warned of potential severe storms that could disrupt Memorial Day weekend plans.

According to the US National Weather Service, while the immediate threat of severe weather today is low, strong to locally severe storms may develop near or south of I-70 late this afternoon or early evening. Damaging winds and hail are the main hazards.

A slow-moving front near the Ohio River will limit storm activity to areas south of I-70 through Thursday, with northern regions remaining dry. However, the front is expected to move north later this week, bringing an increased risk of widespread showers and storms.

Although Saturday is forecasted to start the holiday weekend on a pleasant note, rain chances are expected to rise again on Sunday and Memorial Day.
