Fort Wayne, IN — Motorists in Fort Wayne are being reminded of the heightened presence of law enforcement following the release of comprehensive traffic enforcement data from the start of the year.
The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Traffic Unit has released its activity totals for the first quarter, covering the period from January 1 to March 31, 2026. According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the specialized unit conducted 1,346 total traffic stops during this timeframe as part of an ongoing initiative to increase safety on community streets.
According to the data released Tuesday, April 14, 2026, speeding was the most frequent reason for contact. Officers reportedly stopped 259 drivers for traveling 16-20 MPH over the limit and allegedly cited 230 drivers for speeds exceeding 21 MPH over the posted limit. The report emphasizes that these figures reflect only the activity of the Traffic Unit and do not include stops made by patrol officers or other divisions.
The enforcement efforts also focused heavily on protecting vulnerable areas. According to the department, there were 40 stops made in school zones, 27 in construction zones, and 51 alleged violations involving school bus stop arms.
Beyond speeding, the unit addressed several high-priority safety concerns. According to the statistics, officers allegedly identified 138 instances of motorists driving while suspended or without a license, 22 cases of reckless driving, and five counts of operating while intoxicated. The report also noted 16 felony charges for habitual traffic violators and 13 warrant arrests that reportedly occurred during these stops.
Authorities stated that the unit remains committed to these proactive measures to reduce accidents and improve road safety throughout the city.
