Hastings, Nebraska – Fires could spread out of control within minutes this afternoon across north central Kansas and nearby Nebraska counties as strong winds and dry air combine during peak heating hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon through 9 p.m. Tuesday for areas along and south of the Nebraska-Kansas border, including Phillips, Smith, Jewell, Rooks, Osborne, and Mitchell counties. Southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph, while humidity drops as low as 15 to 20 percent.

These conditions create a high-risk window for rapid fire growth, especially in dry grassland areas. Any spark—from machinery, vehicles, or outdoor burning—could ignite fires that spread quickly and become difficult to control.

Communities including Beloit, Phillipsburg, and Smith Center may see the greatest risk during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and report smoke immediately.

The most dangerous conditions will ease after sunset, but elevated fire risk could persist if dry weather continues into midweek.
