Springfield, Illinois – Drivers and commuters across central Illinois could face sudden downpours and wind gusts topping 60 mph by the late afternoon commute as scattered thunderstorms intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms will develop this afternoon and evening, with the highest severe threat focused north of a Galesburg to Lacon line. Damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter size are the primary hazards, though a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. Activity may weaken overnight before another round of storms redevelops Wednesday afternoon.

The I-55 and I-74 corridors, including Peoria, Bloomington, and Springfield, sit in the zone for repeated storm impacts through Wednesday evening. Localized heavy rain could reduce visibility below one mile and create ponding on roadways during peak travel times. Winds may down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, especially where storms cluster.

Warm, breezy conditions will continue outside of storms, with highs reaching the mid-80s. Additional scattered thunderstorms remain possible into Thursday, though the severe risk appears lower after Wednesday.

Residents should secure outdoor items, identify sturdy shelter locations, and avoid travel during active warnings. Watches and warnings may be issued quickly as storms develop through Wednesday evening.
