Buffalo, NY – Anyone heading near Lake Erie today faces a serious risk within minutes, as frigid water temperatures remain cold enough to cause rapid physical incapacitation.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, water temperatures across Lake Erie and nearby waterways remain below 60°F this week, a threshold where muscle control and coordination can begin to fail in as little as 10 minutes. Even stronger effects occur in colder pockets, where loss of feeling in arms and legs can quickly lead to swimming failure.

The threat extends along the Lake Erie shoreline from Buffalo to Dunkirk, as well as inland rivers and smaller lakes across western New York. Despite milder spring air temperatures, water conditions remain dangerously cold and unforgiving.

Cold water exposure can also lower core body temperature below 95°F, leading to confusion, loss of motor skills, and unconsciousness. These effects significantly reduce the ability to self-rescue without proper flotation.

Anyone boating, kayaking, or fishing should wear a life jacket and avoid entering the water without thermal protection. Officials stress that cold water dangers will persist well into spring.

Additional safety reminders are expected as recreational activity increases across western New York waterways.
