Florida and southwest Georgia are facing a fast-moving combination of fire danger and dangerous coastal conditions right now, with dry air inland and rough surf building along the Gulf. Winds are already picking up, and conditions could worsen quickly through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Red Flag Warning is in effect today for the eastern Florida Panhandle and southwest Georgia, where humidity drops as low as 22 to 28 percent and northeast wind gusts reach 25 to 30 mph. These conditions allow fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly, especially across dry grass and brush.

Communities including Tallahassee, Panama City, Albany, and Bainbridge should avoid outdoor burning and equipment that creates sparks. Even a small fire could grow quickly. Keep vehicles off dry grass and have an emergency plan ready.

Along the coast, marine hazards are intensifying. A Gale Warning and Small Craft Advisory remain in place through Thursday from Destin to Apalachicola and toward the Suwannee River. Seas build to 5 to 8 feet nearshore and up to 11 feet offshore, with winds reaching 20 to 30 knots and higher gusts. Small boats should stay in port.

Beachgoers face a high risk of rip currents, especially along Franklin County beaches including St. George Island. Entering the water is strongly discouraged.

Conditions remain dangerous through Thursday along the coast, while inland fire risk gradually eases after today. Are you seeing strong winds or dry conditions where you are?
