Atlanta, GA – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across parts of Georgia and the Florida Panhandle today as dry air and gusty winds peak by midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee, multiple Red Flag Warnings are in effect from late morning through 8 p.m. across south-central and southeast Georgia, as well as the eastern Florida Panhandle. Relative humidity will drop as low as 22 to 25 percent while northeast winds increase to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

The highest risk areas include Albany, Valdosta, Tifton, Douglas, and Bainbridge in Georgia, along with Tallahassee, Panama City inland areas, and South Walton County in Florida. Counties such as Crisp, Dodge, Coffee, Lowndes, Thomas, and Leon are all under critical fire conditions.

These conditions can cause any spark to ignite fast-moving wildfires, especially along dry grasslands, wooded areas, and near roadways like I-75, US-82, and US-319. Fire crews warn that fires may become erratic and difficult to contain under these wind conditions.

Residents should avoid all outdoor burning, secure equipment that may create sparks, and report any smoke immediately. The fire threat will remain high until winds weaken and humidity recovers after sunset, with additional warnings possible if dry conditions persist.
