Lake County, IN – Two Chicago men were arrested early Sunday after an Indiana State Police pursuit reached speeds of about 136 mph and ended with a crash along Interstate 80 in Lake County, authorities said.
According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Griffin was patrolling in Gary at approximately 3:29 a.m. Sunday when he stopped at Burr Street and 29th Avenue. Police said a green Kia SUV allegedly turned left, nearly struck the patrol vehicle and completed a U-turn behind the trooper.
Police said the Kia allegedly accelerated at a high rate of speed northbound on Burr Street near I-80. The driver then allegedly entered the westbound I-80 exit ramp going the wrong way before making another U-turn and traveling westbound on the interstate.
Authorities said the pursuit reached approximately 136 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. The Kia eventually exited onto the Kennedy Avenue exit ramp, struck a barrier wall and came to an uncontrolled stop.
Police identified the alleged driver as 28-year-old Devin T. Jackson of Chicago. Authorities said Jackson allegedly climbed out through the driver’s window, refused commands and attempted to get away before being taken into custody.
A passenger, identified as 29-year-old Kimber D. Horton of Chicago, allegedly exited the vehicle and tried to flee on foot before stopping when another trooper arrived, police said.
Jackson was taken to a hospital after allegedly refusing field sobriety tests. Police said a warrant was obtained for a blood draw due to the refusal and alleged signs of intoxication.
Jackson was later taken to the Lake County Jail on felony and misdemeanor charges, including resisting law enforcement and operating while intoxicated. Horton was incarcerated on a misdemeanor resisting law enforcement charge.
Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
