Chicago, Illinois – Beachgoers along Lake Michigan should use extra caution today as dangerous swimming conditions continue despite cooler temperatures and lower humidity settling across northern Illinois. While much of the region enjoys a break from recent muggy weather, strong currents along the shoreline remain the most immediate concern through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, decreasing cloud cover this afternoon will allow for more sunshine, although elevated wildfire smoke may create a filtered appearance in the sky. High temperatures will range from the mid-70s near Lake Michigan to the lower and middle 80s farther inland, with comfortable humidity lasting through Thursday. A high swim risk remains in effect for Lake Michigan beaches today and again Wednesday morning.

Dry weather dominates through Thursday with mostly sunny skies Wednesday and a mix of sun and clouds Thursday. Afternoon highs will climb from around 80 to the upper 80s inland while lakeshore communities remain noticeably cooler.

The next opportunity for wet weather arrives late Friday as scattered showers and thunderstorms develop. Rain chances increase further Saturday, when periods of showers and a few thunderstorms could affect outdoor events and travel across the Chicago metro and surrounding northern Illinois communities.

Anyone visiting Lake Michigan beaches should stay out of the water where red flags are posted and follow instructions from local officials. Residents planning outdoor activities later this week should monitor updated forecasts as the timing and coverage of weekend rainfall become clearer. Additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorm chances increase.
