ELMHURST, Ill. – The search for a missing Elmhurst man has come to a tragic end after authorities recovered his body from a local quarry following nearly a week of extensive search efforts.
According to the Elmhurst Police Department, public safety personnel located a deceased individual in the water of the east quarry on Sunday, July 26 using public safety drone technology. Following an examination by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, the individual was positively identified as Gabriel De Sagun, 28.
Gabriel had been reported missing on Monday, July 20, prompting a large-scale search involving the Elmhurst Police Department, Elmhurst Fire Department, and numerous local and regional public safety agencies.
Officials said the search utilized specialized resources, including K-9 teams, drones, boats, sonar equipment, and aviation assets. Daily drone flights over the quarry continued until Gabriel was located.
Elmhurst Police Chief Mike McLean extended condolences to Gabriel’s family and thanked the first responders, partner agencies, community volunteers, and residents who supported the search effort.
“While this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, we are grateful for the efforts of the first responders and community volunteers who dedicated countless hours to this search,” McLean said in a statement.
The circumstances surrounding Gabriel’s death remain under investigation in coordination with the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the cause or manner of death.
Police are asking the public to respect the privacy of Gabriel’s family as they grieve.
