Wichita, Kansas – Dangerous heat is once again gripping much of central and southern Kansas today, with heat index values climbing as high as 115 degrees and creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the most dangerous heat is expected between noon and 9 p.m. Sunday, when a combination of temperatures in the 90s and oppressive humidity will push heat index values between 105 and 115 degrees. The highest values are expected across portions of central and eastern Kansas, where heat-related illnesses can develop quickly without proper precautions.
Communities across the region will experience dangerous conditions, including Wichita (111° heat index), Hutchinson (111°), Salina (113°), Russell (111°), Great Bend (110°), Pratt (110°), Harper (111°), Winfield (108°), Emporia (110°), Eureka (111°), Coffeyville (112°), Chanute (110°) and Topeka (115°).
Residents are urged to postpone strenuous outdoor work until the early morning or evening hours whenever possible. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in the shade, drink water before becoming thirsty and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Officials also encourage checking on older adults, people without reliable air conditioning and anyone with chronic health conditions.
The National Weather Service reminds drivers to never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short time, as temperatures inside a vehicle can become life-threatening within minutes. Anyone attending outdoor sporting events, fairs or recreational activities should plan for frequent cooling breaks.
The dangerous heat is expected to persist through the afternoon and early evening before gradually easing after sunset. Additional heat advisories or warnings could be issued if the prolonged stretch of oppressive heat continues into the new week.
