Duluth, Minnesota – Dangerous heat continues across northern Minnesota today, with heat advisories and extreme heat warnings in effect as heat index values climb into the 90s for much of the Northland and approach 100 degrees in some southern communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the hottest conditions will develop this afternoon and continue into the early evening. While wildfire smoke is expected to slightly limit heating across portions of the Arrowhead, oppressive humidity will still create hazardous conditions for those spending extended time outdoors.
Communities including Brainerd, Aitkin and Hinckley could see heat index values between 101 and 105 degrees, while Walker may reach around 98 degrees. Grand Rapids is expected to top out near 97 degrees, with Bigfork around 97 degrees and International Falls near 92 degrees. Along the North Shore, cooler lake air will keep heat indices lower, including Duluth (95°), Two Harbors (85°), Silver Bay (85°), Grand Marais (73°) and Grand Portage (73°). Wisconsin communities including Hayward (98°), Ashland (95°), Hurley (93°), Siren (105°) and Phillips (95°) will also experience dangerous heat.
Residents should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service notes that additional heat headlines may be needed Monday as the prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather continues.
