Wichita, Kansas – Dangerous summer heat will continue across central, south-central and southeast Kansas through at least midweek, with afternoon heat index values climbing to 105 degrees or higher through Tuesday, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, high temperatures will climb into the upper 90s and low 100s beginning Sunday, with the hottest conditions expected Monday when highs reach 100 to 107 degrees. Overnight lows will remain unusually warm, ranging from the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, providing little overnight relief.
Communities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, El Dorado, Winfield, Arkansas City and Coffeyville will experience prolonged periods of dangerous heat. While most locations remain dry, isolated thunderstorm chances of around 10% are possible Monday and Tuesday, but they are not expected to provide widespread cooling.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Conditions begin to ease slightly by Wednesday, with highs forecast between 94 and 99 degrees, though the weather will remain hot enough to require heat safety precautions.
