Bedford Township, MI – Monroe County Sheriff’s detectives are asking for the public’s help after determining that a man found dead along South Telegraph Road was the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called at 1:28 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2026, after a deceased person was discovered on the side of South Telegraph Road, north of Crabb Road, in Bedford Township.
Following an investigation and an autopsy conducted by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office in Toledo, Ohio, authorities identified the victim as Kevin Wayne Chesney, 61, of Temperance, Michigan. The coroner determined Chesney died from blunt force trauma to the head consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle.
Investigators believe Chesney was walking northbound on the east side of South Telegraph Road when he was struck by a passing vehicle. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver did not stop and left the scene.
Detectives believe the vehicle involved may have been a pickup truck or commercial vehicle that sustained passenger-side damage, possibly to the mirror or another object extending from the side of the vehicle.
Members of the Monroe Community Ambulance and the Bedford Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. The Traffic Services Division continues to investigate the fatal crash.
