Lincoln, Illinois – Cooler-than-normal temperatures will give central Illinois a brief break through Friday before a sharp surge in heat and humidity arrives early next week, bringing triple-digit heat indices and an increasing chance for strong thunderstorms. Residents should use the next couple of days to prepare for much warmer conditions expected by Sunday and especially Monday, when outdoor activities could become hazardous during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, seasonably cool weather will continue through Friday with daytime highs generally ranging from the mid-70s to around 80 degrees. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible each day through the weekend, but the more significant weather shift begins Sunday as highs climb into the lower 90s. By Monday, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s with heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees.
Communities including Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, Champaign-Urbana, Peoria and surrounding areas should prepare for increasing heat stress, particularly during the afternoon and early evening. Anyone working or spending extended time outdoors should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Thunderstorm chances continue through the weekend, with the greatest potential for stronger storms developing from later Sunday into Monday night as hotter, more humid air spreads across the region. While widespread severe weather is not guaranteed, some storms could become strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall.
