Cheyenne, WY – Travel across Wyoming’s high country is rapidly becoming impossible as heavy snow and powerful wind gusts create whiteout conditions through Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Sierra Madre and Snowy ranges until 6 p.m. Friday, with 12 to 18 inches of snow expected and up to 20 inches possible at higher elevations. Wind gusts reaching 60 mph are combining with snowfall to reduce visibility to near zero at times and create deep drifts across mountain passes.
Areas near Centennial and Albany are seeing the most severe impacts, with blowing snow covering roadways and making route navigation difficult. Wyoming Highway 130 through the Snowy Range is especially vulnerable to closures as conditions deteriorate. Backcountry areas face life-threatening exposure risks, particularly for hikers and snowmobilers who may become disoriented in rapidly changing visibility.
Officials urge travelers to avoid mountain routes entirely and delay outdoor recreation plans. Anyone venturing out should carry emergency supplies, including extra food, water, and cold-weather gear.
Hazardous conditions will persist through Friday evening, and additional closures or advisories remain possible as snowfall and wind continue.
