Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Anyone planning a trip to Lake Michigan beaches this morning should stay out of the water as dangerous waves and powerful currents create life-threatening swimming conditions along parts of Wisconsin’s shoreline through early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a High Swim Risk remains in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday for the Lake Michigan beaches of Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. Forecasters warn that north winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, will generate waves of 3 to 5 feet, creating dangerous structural currents near piers and breakwalls.
The highest threat is along exposed beaches in southeastern Wisconsin, where strong currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Officials strongly advise staying out of the water and avoiding piers, jetties and breakwalls, where waves can easily sweep people into the lake.
Even experienced swimmers are at risk when high waves and structural currents develop. Beachgoers should closely follow posted warning flags and any instructions from local authorities before entering the water.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after early afternoon as winds diminish, but visitors should continue monitoring the latest beach forecasts before heading to Lake Michigan, as additional advisories could be issued if hazardous conditions persist.
