Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas – Anyone heading outdoors across North and Central Texas today will face another dangerous round of extreme heat, with heat index values climbing as high as 116 degrees across parts of the region. While a few isolated thunderstorms could develop late this afternoon and evening, most communities will remain hot, dry and under hazardous heat conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening for much of north-central and northeastern Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, where afternoon heat index values could reach 116 degrees. A Heat Advisory continues for portions of central and northwestern Texas, with heat index values as high as 108 degrees extending into Thursday.
Afternoon high temperatures are expected to reach 105 degrees in Dallas-Fort Worth, 104 in Graham, 103 in Palestine, 102 in Waco, Killeen and Canton, 100 in Sherman and Cisco, and 99 degrees in Paris. Only a 10 to 15 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms is expected across parts of western and central North Texas later today, providing only brief relief for a few locations.
Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and wear lightweight clothing. Officials also remind drivers to never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The dangerous heat will remain the primary weather story through this evening, with additional heat headlines possible if the prolonged stretch of triple-digit temperatures continues across North and Central Texas.
