Loudoun County, VA – Authorities are warning residents about cryptocurrency scams prompting financial losses and urgent fraud reports.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, scammers are increasingly contacting individuals and demanding payment in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or gift cards under false claims tied to legal trouble. Officials stressed that law enforcement and government agencies will never request payment through cryptocurrency or gift cards for any reason, including bail, fines, missed jury duty, or warrants.
The alert outlines several common tactics used in these scams. Victims may receive QR codes to scan for payment, be told their money is at risk, or be threatened with arrest if they do not comply immediately. Authorities say these pressure tactics are designed to create panic and force quick decisions without verification.
Officials emphasized that any unsolicited demand involving cryptocurrency should be treated as suspicious. The sheriff’s office noted that legitimate agencies do not operate this way and encouraged residents to pause and verify any such claims before taking action.
The warning comes as scams involving digital currency continue to rise nationwide, with fraudsters exploiting the anonymity and speed of crypto transactions. Once funds are sent, recovery is often difficult or impossible.
Residents who believe they may be targeted or have already sent money are urged to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021. Additional information is available at sheriff.loudoun.gov.
For commuters, students, and young workers who frequently use digital payment tools, officials say awareness is key to avoiding financial loss.
