Lubbock, Texas – Triple-digit heat is once again spreading across the South Plains and Rolling Plains today, with a Heat Advisory in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. for portions of the Rolling Plains as dangerously hot afternoon temperatures increase the risk of heat-related illness.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, highs will climb into the upper 90s and lower 100s across much of the region. Forecast highs include 100 degrees in Lubbock, Plainview and Brownfield, 99 degrees in Friona, 103 degrees in Childress, and 104 degrees in Aspermont, where the Heat Advisory is in effect. Overnight lows will remain warm, ranging from the lower 70s to lower 80s.
The advisory primarily covers areas off the Caprock, including portions of the Rolling Plains, where prolonged exposure to the heat could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Communities such as Childress and Aspermont will experience the most intense heat during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activities between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The warming trend is expected to continue across West Texas, with little relief during the overnight hours. Additional Heat Advisories may be issued if dangerous temperatures persist, so residents should continue monitoring the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service.
