Wichita Falls, Texas – Residents across northwest Texas face an immediate tornado threat this evening as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until midnight, with storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 86 includes 18 counties stretching from Wichita Falls to Childress and south toward Haskell and Throckmorton. Areas under the watch include Archer, Clay, Wilbarger, Baylor, and Hardeman counties, where atmospheric conditions support rapid storm development through the evening hours.

Storms are expected to intensify through sunset and track east across the region, potentially impacting major roadways including U.S. 287 and U.S. 82. The greatest risk window extends through late evening, when instability and wind shear peak.

Residents in Wichita Falls, Vernon, and surrounding communities should be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued. Tornadoes can develop rapidly with little notice, especially within stronger storm cells.

Now is the time to identify a safe shelter location, charge mobile devices, and ensure multiple ways to receive alerts. Avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during severe storms.

The tornado watch remains in effect until midnight, and additional warnings may be issued as storms develop across north Texas tonight.
