La Crosse, Wis. – Residents across western and central Wisconsin should prepare for a potentially active afternoon and evening as numerous strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Damaging winds capable of reaching 75 mph pose the greatest threat, but large hail up to 2 inches in diameter and a few tornadoes are also possible.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, confidence remains high that thunderstorms will intensify late this afternoon before becoming numerous by early evening. The highest severe weather threat stretches from areas near Wisconsin Dells and Black River Falls toward Mauston and surrounding communities, while La Crosse, Eau Claire, Winona, and Rochester also face the potential for severe storms.
The primary hazard will be destructive straight-line winds that could down trees, damage power lines, and lead to scattered power outages. Any stronger storms may also produce very large hail capable of damaging vehicles and roofs, while isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Torrential rainfall could cause localized street and low-lying flooding where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.
Motorists on Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and other major highways should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, including sudden reductions in visibility and strong crosswinds during the evening commute.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture and other loose objects, charge electronic devices in case of power outages, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish after 9 p.m., although a few lingering thunderstorms may continue into the night. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms develop this afternoon and evening.
