Pendleton, Ore. – Anyone with outdoor plans across central and southern Oregon on Tuesday should be prepared for developing afternoon and evening thunderstorms that could create dangerous fire weather conditions despite producing only limited rainfall. Lightning and strong, erratic wind gusts may quickly increase wildfire concerns near existing fires.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening across portions of central and southern Oregon. While these storms are not expected to generate widespread heavy rainfall, they are capable of producing moderate lightning, gusty outflow winds, and a few isolated heavy downpours.
The greatest concern is the potential for dry or nearly dry thunderstorms, where lightning strikes occur outside areas receiving meaningful rainfall. Gusty outflow winds could rapidly change fire behavior around ongoing wildfires, creating hazardous conditions for firefighters and nearby communities.
Areas including Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Madras, Burns, John Day, Lakeview, and surrounding communities should monitor changing weather conditions through Tuesday evening. Outdoor recreationists, campers, and anyone working in fire-prone areas should be prepared to seek shelter quickly if thunderstorms develop.
Residents are urged to move indoors immediately when thunder is heard and remain inside for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble. Those planning outdoor activities should review the latest National Weather Service forecasts before heading out, as thunderstorms may develop with little warning.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to diminish Tuesday night, but fire weather concerns may continue where lightning ignites new fires or gusty winds affect ongoing wildfire operations. Additional weather statements could be issued if storm coverage or impacts increase.
