Lubbock, Texas – Wind gusts up to 50 mph could rapidly spread fires and create dangerous travel conditions across the South Plains by early afternoon, prompting urgent warnings for residents across the Caprock.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with southwest winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph and relative humidity dropping as low as 17 percent. A Wind Advisory is also in place through 8 p.m. for western areas, where blowing dust may reduce visibility on roadways.
Communities including Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, and Brownfield face the highest fire danger, especially in open fields and along highways like US-84 and US-87 where sparks could quickly ignite dry vegetation.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Drivers should use caution in areas of blowing dust, which may suddenly reduce visibility.
The elevated fire risk will persist through the evening hours, and additional warnings could be issued if conditions worsen.
