Melbourne, Florida – Entering the water along Florida’s Atlantic coast could turn dangerous within minutes today as strong rip currents continue to impact beaches despite otherwise calm weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect for all Atlantic beaches, including Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne Beach, and the Treasure Coast. Surf heights of 3 to 5 feet are helping generate numerous and powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore.

Conditions may appear safe with mostly dry weather and temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s across cities like Orlando, Sanford, and Vero Beach, but officials stress that the ocean remains hazardous. Even experienced swimmers are at risk under these conditions.

Beachgoers are strongly urged to stay out of the water. If entering the surf, swimming near a staffed lifeguard tower is critical. Never attempt to swim directly against a rip current; instead, float and swim parallel to shore.

The high rip current risk will persist through today, and additional beach hazard statements may be issued if conditions continue.
