Susanville, CA – Strong winds are expected to sweep across northeast California beginning Wednesday afternoon, creating hazardous travel and raising the threat of power outages across Lassen, eastern Plumas, and eastern Sierra counties through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a High Wind Warning takes effect 2 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 11 a.m. Thursday for communities including Susanville, Portola, Loyalton, Westwood, and Sierraville. Southwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph, with widespread gusts reaching 50 mph.
The strongest winds are expected along U.S. Highway 395, especially between Janesville and the Nevada state line, where gusts could approach 70 mph in wind-prone corridors. These conditions could make driving difficult, particularly for semi-trucks, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles traveling through exposed stretches of highway.
Forecasters warn that strong gusts could topple trees and power lines, increasing the risk for scattered power outages across rural communities in Lassen and eastern Plumas counties. Blowing debris may also create sudden hazards for motorists Wednesday evening and overnight.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash bins, and decorations before winds increase Wednesday afternoon. Emergency officials recommend preparing for potential outages by keeping flashlights, spare batteries, and extra food and water available.
Winds should gradually ease late Thursday morning, though additional advisories may be issued if strong gusts continue across the region.
