Portland, Ore. – Residents across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington should prepare for the hottest weather of the week as temperatures climb into the upper 90s, prompting a Heat Advisory that will remain in effect through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, the Heat Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 11 p.m. Wednesday for the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area, southwest Washington lowlands, the western and central Columbia River Gorge, and the central Willamette Valley. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to reach 95 to 98 degrees, creating moderate to major HeatRisk capable of affecting most people, especially those without access to cooling or those spending extended time outdoors.
Communities including Portland, Vancouver, Salem, Hillsboro, Gresham, Oregon City and areas along the Columbia River Gorge are expected to experience the most significant heat. Prolonged exposure during the afternoon and early evening could increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Residents are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded locations. Check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling. Those planning to swim in rivers or lakes should also be aware that cold water shock remains a serious hazard despite the hot weather and should wear a properly fitted life jacket.
The hottest conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday before temperatures gradually ease later in the week. Additional heat-related advisories could be issued if the warm pattern persists.
