Wichita, Kan. – Spotty showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop across central and south-central Kansas through early Sunday evening, bringing brief heavy rainfall and occasional lightning but no widespread severe weather threat.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, isolated thunderstorms are expected to persist through 6 p.m. Sunday. While the storms are not expected to become severe, they may produce localized downpours that temporarily reduce visibility and create ponding on roads, along with dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.
The greatest coverage is expected across portions of central and eastern Kansas, including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia, Great Bend, Medicine Lodge, Eureka, Chanute and surrounding communities. Rainfall will be uneven, with some neighborhoods remaining dry while others receive a quick burst of heavy rain.
Motorists should slow down if they encounter heavy rainfall, allowing extra stopping distance on wet roads. Anyone attending outdoor events should move indoors immediately if thunder is heard or lightning is observed, as lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rain.
Storm activity is expected to diminish after early evening, with no widespread severe weather anticipated. Even so, residents should continue monitoring local weather updates in case individual storms briefly intensify or expand before moving out of the region.
