Detroit, Michigan – Drivers across southern Michigan could face sudden wind gusts nearing 60 mph and bursts of hail by mid-afternoon Tuesday as a growing cluster of thunderstorms pushes toward the Great Lakes.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, storms now developing over Illinois and Indiana are expected to intensify between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. EDT as they move into a more unstable air mass. Forecasters point to dew points rising near 60°F and wind shear of 30 to 40 knots as key ingredients supporting stronger storms.
The threat stretches from central Illinois through Indianapolis and into Detroit, with impacts likely along major corridors including I-94, I-69, and I-75. Brief hail has already been reported in Illinois, and storms are expected to organize into a line capable of producing damaging straight-line winds as they track east.
Power outages and travel disruptions are possible, especially during the late afternoon commute. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and be ready to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued.
The storm threat will continue pushing into northwest Ohio by early evening, and additional watches may be issued as conditions evolve through Tuesday.
