Guadalupe Mountains National Park, TX – Violent winds capable of overturning high-profile vehicles are expected to slam the Guadalupe Mountains Wednesday, prompting a High Wind Warning for parts of West Texas and southeast New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, west winds will strengthen late Wednesday morning with sustained speeds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts reaching 70 mph across the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains, including elevations above 7,000 feet. The warning runs from 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday through 1 a.m. CDT Thursday.
The strongest impacts are expected along U.S. Highway 62/180 through Guadalupe Pass, where powerful crosswinds frequently create hazardous conditions for tractor-trailers, vans, and campers. Officials warn that sudden gusts could push vehicles across lanes or force temporary travel restrictions if conditions worsen.
Blowing dust is also possible along exposed ridges and desert corridors, which may quickly reduce visibility for drivers entering the pass from Culberson County or approaching from southern New Mexico. Loose outdoor objects around Pine Springs, Queen, and nearby park facilities could be tossed or damaged during peak wind periods.
Drivers are urged to delay travel through the pass Wednesday afternoon if possible and secure outdoor equipment ahead of the wind surge. Park visitors should prepare for rapidly changing mountain conditions.
The strongest winds should ease after midnight Wednesday night, though breezy conditions may linger into Thursday. Additional advisories could be issued if winds intensify further across the region.
