Chicago, Illinois – Thunderstorms could disrupt the evening commute across northern Illinois with bursts of heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts approaching 40 mph between mid-afternoon and early evening Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, another round of showers and storms is expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. CDT, with the strongest activity likely near the Wisconsin state line early before shifting east of I-57 later in the evening. A few storms may become severe on a localized basis.

The primary threats include isolated hail, strong wind gusts, and brief downpours that could reduce visibility on major roadways such as I-90, I-94, and I-55. While widespread severe weather is not expected, any stronger storm could quickly impact travel in the Chicago metro area, including O’Hare and Midway corridors.

Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared for sudden changes during the evening drive. Outdoor plans may need quick adjustments as storms pass through.

Storms are expected to move east at 40 to 45 mph, with conditions improving later tonight, though additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop.
