Madison County, AL – Alabama authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting after a Madison County Sheriff’s deputy shot an armed man during a domestic violence response in the Toney community on Saturday.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the incident occurred on Saturday, July 18, 2026, after deputies responded to an in-progress domestic violence call in the 100 block of Pulley Lane in Toney.
Investigators said deputies arrived to find a woman being chased by an armed man who was actively firing a handgun at her. A Madison County Sheriff’s deputy discharged his weapon, striking the suspect and stopping the threat.
The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Jody Drake Jr. of Toney. Authorities said he was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment. His condition has not been released.
ALEA said the female victim was not injured during the incident, and no deputies were hurt.
At the request of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, special agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have assumed responsibility for investigating the deputy-involved shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Officials have not released additional details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officer-involved shootings in Alabama are routinely investigated by ALEA when requested by local law enforcement agencies to ensure an independent review of the incident.
